    Q
What should I know before meeting with a lawyer for the first time?
AWhenever a potential client meets with a lawyer, it is important to remember that lawyer-client communications and meetings are private and confidential. Such communications and meetings are protected by solicitor-client privilege. The lawyer cannot discuss the case or matter with third parties without the client’s consent. There are certain exceptions to this general rule. However, solicitor-client privilege allows the lawyer and client to freely discuss the case or matter and for the client to get proper legal advice from the lawyer. Sometimes, the lawyer will need to review the documentation and materials and review of the applicable law in order to provide a legal opinion. It is important for the client to be as organized as possible for the first meeting. If you have been served with any court documentation, please bring that documentation to the meeting. Likewise, if there have been previous court orders made with respect to your matter, please bring that documentation to the initial meeting as well.
    Q
What should I bring to my consultation if I have a Family Law matter?
AFamily law matters can involve such issues as child support, spousal support, division of property, parenting time and parental arrangements. Documents such as income tax returns, notices of assessment T4 slips, payroll information, court documents and previous court orders will assist the lawyer in providing proper legal advice to the client.
